Monotype prints are unique prints created through a process of oily inks being pressed and transferred from a flat surface onto paper. Gestural and textural marks can be achieved through the use of a wide variety of tools which can either remove or apply the ink to your plate. This playful process is very flexible and very generative for painters, printmakers and image makers of any kind. Monotype / Monoprinting is a flexible and liberating process and is not only a great introduction to Printmaking but can also be used in combination with other relief and intaglio techniques, to add texture, depth and tone.
Intro to Monotype workshop: This workshop is for beginners, artists and experienced printmakers who are curious about monotype and Fiona's approach. This particular process is favourable to those who prefer a more painterly effect to their prints, as gestural and textural marks can be achieved through the use of a wide variety of tools which can either remove or apply the ink to your plate. Through these tools, you will explore the boundaries of mark making with Monotypes. The workshop will allow you to experiment with both black and coloured inks, using Fiona’s portable presses; you will try out a variety of ways of creating imagery, from making stencil and using natural materials to painting directly on a plate. By the end of the day you will have created a varied collection of experimental, original prints.
Further Explorations Workshop: In this workshop we will be combining monoprinting with more techniques such as drypoint and chin collecting. With drypoint, a plate surface (metal, perspex or board) is directly scratched with a sharp tool to produce an incised (intaglio) line. The plate can then be printed using the same technique as etching. Due to the burr that is raised in the scratching of the surface, the printed line has a softer quality than an etched line. We will explore the possibilities of combining drypoint and monoprint, since both techniques offer similar ways of working intuitively, directly and with speed. Chine colle is another way to add colour through including paper with a different colour or texture. Whether you are a complete beginner to printmaking, a Lino cutter or even an Etcher, this course will bring a new dynamic to your skill set. All materials will be provided. By the end of the day you will have created a varied collection of unique prints. This class is open to people who have not done a workshop with Fiona before.
