Curious about oil painting? This is a one-day course to introduce you to the basics of oil painting. Oil painting can be intimidating and seem difficult to do at home, but it actually very doable! Whether you are a curious absolute beginner or someone who wants to get back into oil painting, this day course will help you get up and running. We will cover basics as palette set-up, types of brushes, mediums, painting surfaces, paints and various ways of beginning a painting. You will practise colour mixing and brushwork and take inspiration from a wide variety of amazing paintings from art history. In the afternoon you will get the chance to make a small painting from observation. At the end of the day, you will take away a list of materials and notes, your painting, and basic skills to get going with oil paints.

Monotype prints are unique prints created through a process of oily inks being pressed and transferred from a flat surface onto paper. Gestural and textural marks can be achieved through the use of a wide variety of tools which can either remove or apply the ink to your plate. This playful process is very flexible and very generative for painters, printmakers and image makers of any kind.
The Intro to Monotype workshop is for beginners, artists and experienced printmakers who are curious about monotype and Fiona's approach. The workshop will allow you to experiment with both black and coloured inks, using Fiona’s portable presses; you will try out a variety of ways of creating imagery, from making stencil and using natural materials to painting directly on a plate. By the end of the day you will have created a varied collection of experimental, original prints.
The Further Explorations Workshop is for people who have already attended Fiona’s Intro to Monotype workshop (either here or somewhere else). The workshop will allow you time to delve deeper into what you've learned, using your own imagery and ideas, and to add a few more techniques to your belt, including chine colle and dry point. The day is structured but also allows time for exploring individual pursuits.
Monotype classes are limited to 6 students and a great deal of individual attention is given. It takes place in a bright and welcoming studio in Stoke Newington, just south of Clissold Park on a residential street (access up two flights of stairs). We will break for an hour for lunch from 1:00-2:00pm. Tea and biscuits provided!
Street parking is free on Sundays (apart from Arsenal match days), and you can purchase parking passes from the host for £5 day on match days. October 16th is a match day.
*Tuition is non-refundable.
Fiona Fouhy graduated in Fine Art from Central St Martins and has made monoprinting her primary medium for the last decade. Fiona has taught workshops at East London Printmakers and other venues and exhibits and sells her prints widely.
